Why your Maternity Pay won’t be Enough

1950's HousewifeI remember when I was growing up in the 70′s it was common place for many of my classmates to have a stay-at-home-mum. Even those that did work had been at home until the children had started full time school and then worked part-time. My mother did have a part-time job before my sister started school, but it was an evening job so she was still at home during the day and my father was with us in the evening.

Roll on 30-40 years and things are much different. Continue reading “Why your Maternity Pay won’t be Enough” »

What 5 Simple Vegetables Can Help Breast Cancer Sufferers?

According to a study carried out in China, yes. This was reported recently at the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting. What they found was that women that consumed high amounts of cruciferous vegetables, or those from the cabbage family, had lower mortality rates from breast cancer when compared with those consuming significantly lower levels. Examples of the types of vegetables we’re talking about include cabbage, brocolli, cauliflower, bok choy and brussel sprouts.

In fact, the risk of recurrence from the disease was also lower as were mortality rates in general within this population. I would also like to point out that the Chinese seem to consume much greater amounts of these vegetables than those of us in the Western World.

How can Eating a Curry Outside Prevent Dementia?

Fish Curry prepared in Kerala style. its prepa...

You may be wondering what the link is between a curry, the sun and Alzheimers. There’s been a loose connection between Vitamin D3 and cumin and Alzheimers for a significant period of time but now, researchers have proven this link exists. Previous evidence indicated that vitamin D3 may help to clear the brain of a protein, amyloid beta. Scientists at the University of California have now proven that vitamin D and cumin helps stimulate the immune system to activate key genes which clear this protein from the brain.

Researchers suggest supplementing with 5000-7000 units of D3 with 300-500 mg of cumin daily will provide a synergistic effect to clear these proteins and reduce the possibility of Alzheimers occurring.

UK Minimum Wage on the Increase – at Least for Some….

PenceIt’s been reported that the minimum wage is set to increase by 11 pence per hour to £6.19, as of October. This equates to an increase of just 1.8%. As the current rate of inflation is 3.4%, this essentially means it continues to be a pay cut. The other issue is that it is not across the board and 16-20 year olds will get no increase whilst apprentices will get a pay rise of 5 pence taking them up to £2.65 an hour.

Is this the Answer to Permanent Weight Loss?

As a nation, we are obsessed with weight, with tv programs such as The Biggest Loser and Supersize vs Superskinny becoming increasingly popular. With an estimate of 22-24% of adults being classified as obese, is it any wonder people are having extreme surgery like gastric bypass in an attempt to permanently lose weight. Obesity is often blamed on poor diet and poor lifestyle choices, but is that the whole story?

How safe are Cola soft drinks?

English: Glass of cola

I’ve come across a couple of articles today which raise concerns about drinking cola, particularly coke and Pepsi, and other sugary drinks and I’ve found them quite disturbing.

It has been reported that men who have just one sugary drink per day (excluding fruit juice) are 20% more at risk of developing a heart attack. Continue reading “How safe are Cola soft drinks?” »

LONDON, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 12: A general view...

There was a news article in the Guardian about the amount of money going to claims companies that should be going to the claimants instead.

Nearly £50M in payouts was being skimmed off the top by these companies THIS YEAR ALONE. This is money that should be being paid to the claimants, but these companies mystify the process, by making it sound complicated and difficult to follow.

Instead of using these companies, and losing 30% of your returned money, do it yourself.

Money Saving Expert has a easy to follow free guide that will get you started. A little time and effort now, will get you a bigger return later.
